She and her biographer were both real-life Scarlett O'Haras. Born to privilege and wealth in antebellum Virginia, she married at seventeen and then was plunged into the events of the American Civil War. Myrta Lockett Avary was her biographer and though Avary does not give up her friend's identity, the story captured the imagination of the world when first published in 1903. Avary also wrote "Dixie After the War," which may have been the inspiration for Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind." She was also the original editor of "A Diary from Dixie as written by Mary Boykin Chestnut," featured very prominently in Ken Burns' documentary, The Civil War. A write for major periodicals during her day, Myrta Avary was a successful and well-known writer. We're fortunate that she chronicled the world that was left behind in the wake of the Civil War. Appreciate the fact that the book may be old, it doesn't say what year it was written. Wish it did. The story wasn't bad, funny in parts, but not real well written. And alot of typo errors. I love civil war stories, so I read it all the way through. Because it truly wasn't that bad a story. Just a little disjointed and some words even missing, but very readable .Main characters ve ry interesting and funny at times.Product details

Another attempt at excusing slavery. The slaves were servants, not slaves, all were happy, none wanted to be free, they were an inherited burden to be taken care of, etc. This author can't seem to figure out that if it was such trouble to have slaves, excuse me, servants, all one had to do was free them. A waste of reading time.
Stuff we were never taught in school. Great book and a fascinating read. Highly recommended if you want to learn what it was really like for the women of the Confederacy during the War of Northern Aggression (The Civil War).
I really enjoyed reading this book and didn't want to put my kindle down. This book was edited by Myrta Lockett Avary who also helped to edit Mary Chestnut's "A Diary From Dixie". Books like this tell what it was really like during the War of Northern Aggression.
One of the best books I have ever read. It is a classic.
I thought it was interesting especially how she was able to travel so much during the war...it's easy and light but keeps us history buffs hooked.
Enjoyed it very much!
Great behind the scenes read, not much battle action. Get good insight to life back on "the homefront". Yank or Reb, you have to sympathize with the sufferings "back home". You might see some typos but won't hurt the story.
